Tegla Loroupe Peace Foundation will this year be hosting its 7th edition of Moroto Peace Race, in Moroto Uganda on 3rd July 2010 in Moroto township. Moroto Peace race 2010 Newsletter

The race is a cross-border peace-building event aimed at building trust and intercommunity relations among conflict-affected communities in the Karamojang Cluster, Karamojang, Sebei (Uganda), North Rift (Kenya) Pokot, Marakwet, Turkana, Samburu, and Sabaot, and warriors from Southern Sudan and also consolidating gains made in peace building and guard against rolling back towards conflict between pastoralist communities in the Karamojang cluster.
It will be a great opportunity to experience the Power of Sports in unifying and enhancing peace. Amb. Tegla Loroupe, and other elite athletes from Kenya and Uganda will grace the race.
 
Venue


The 7th Edition Moroto Peace Race will held at Moroto Town in Moroto District

North East of Uganda. The Karamajong and Pokot communities are the major inhabitants of Moroto region. This has been a very hostile region in terms of banditry, cattle rustling/raids since pre-colonial periods.

The race will dedicate efforts towards peace attainment and sustainability of development in the region. It was meant for emphasis on peace in the Karamoja cluster (Karamoja, Pokot and Turkana.) who have been in constant conflict since time immemorial. This conflict has been there throughout the pre and post colonial periods.

The race will be organized primarily for the young and old men and women who have most of the periods engaged in conflicts and civil strife. These groups will get an opportunity to understand each other better and also have a chance to share their cultural values, norms and virtues.  

Activities
-    Peace Race – 10 Km Women and Men
-    Music Competition
-    Peace Forum between stakeholders and warriors
-    Bull Slaughtering ceremony
-    Closing ceremony

Sports is one of the arsenals that this event was organized for in order to achieve social interaction between the warring communities. Athletics more so has been the greatest armory in establishing cohesiveness in ensuring every person in the group gets a chance to interact with one another amicably without regarding past differences. Sports for peace is one of the major ways of building trust a foundation that needs to be nurtured slowly till it becomes strong.
