TEGLA LOROUPE PEACE FOUNDATION

27th to 28th May 2011 8th Edition of Moroto Peace Race
8th EDITION MOROTO PEACE RACE 28th May 2011.
Dubbed “Empowering and Talents Tapping for Enhanced Livelihood Options, the Path to Peace” Moroto Peace Race will take place in Moroto Uganda on 27th – 28th May 2011.

The race is expected to attract people from across border countries including runners, conflict and peace building practitioners and provincial administration to address conflict issues.

The Tegla Loroupe Peace Foundation hopes that through this race it will continue to address the marginalized pastoralists and agro-pastoralists problems, learn and share with them new and innovative ways of changing the perspectives and priorities of their communities to include programs that care for their children, women and are of socio-economic benefit to the general society as a whole.

The project targets pastoral communities found in the Karamoja cluster. Men, women and children who are the most vulnerable victims of the conflicts, young men (including warriors), women and leaders will all have an opportunity to address their conflict issues in the same forum. The race will involve supplying the participants with T-Shirts bearing peace messages written in different languages while marching across the town. The civil societies will have time to talk to the communities, passing on the peace messages. At the end of the race there will be a conflict sensitivity workshop and traditional peace songs performances.
These activities are in line with the development strategies guiding both the Ugandan and Kenyan governments in the region. Within the Ugandan Government’s Peace, Recovery and Development Plan for Northern Uganda (PRDP), these activities directly relate to Strategic
Objective Four: Peace Building and Reconciliation, in particular the priority action “reinforcing mechanisms for local intra/inter communal conflict resolution.” This is particularly true as these activities involve the reintegration of ex-combatants. The activities are also in line with the security, peace-building and conflict management strategies in Kenya’s Vision 2030 document; Promoting processes for national and inter-community dialogue in order to build harmony among ethnic, racial and other interest groups; Promoting peace building and reconciliation to improve conflict management and ensure sustained peace within the country.

AMB. DR. TEGLA LOROUPE NOMINEE FOR JEAN BOROTRA WORLD FAIR PLAY AWARD

BRINGING PEACE THROUGH SPORTS & DEVELOPMENT IN THE GREATER HORN OF AFRICA REGION

Tegla Loroupe Peace Foundation was established in 2003 by Tegla Loroupe, a 3 time world half-marathon champion, a 2 time world marathon record holder, amongst several other national and international titles.

Sports is one of the arsenals that this event was organized for in order to achieve social interaction between the warring communities. Athletics more so has been the greatest armory in establishing cohesiveness in ensuring every person in the group gets a chance to interact with one another amicably without regarding past differences. Sports for peace is one of the major ways of building trust a foundation that needs to be nurtured slowly till it becomes strong.
