REFUGEE TEAM FLOORS REGIONAL GIANTS IN NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

It was all systems go for the Athletics Kenya National Cross Country Championships in Eldoret, on Saturday, 23 February 2019. The championships kicked off at 12pm and it welcomed the participation of our refugee athletes for the first time ever. Athletics Kenya was using the championships in Eldoret as trial for the Kenya team to the 43rd IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Aarhus, Denmark in March 2019. Our team of 6 athletes did compete in the Senior Men category and were scheduled to take to the course at about 3:45pm Kenya time.   The championships was graced by HE Deputy President of the Republic of Kenya, Dr. William Ruto who was the Chief Guest. NTV Kenya, Kenya Broadcasting Corporation, KASS TV and many other top television channels beamed the championships live.

In the Senior Men category that our team competed in, we emerged Position 11 out of a total of 18 teams. Our team scored 281 points.

We are very encouraged by the resilience of all our athletes who gave their all against top elite athletes from across the country and ensured that they completed the race. Our athletes also joined their compatriots in attending the Anti-Doping Seminar organized by Athletics Kenya, and at which they committed to compete as clean athletes saying ‘No To Doping’.
